As a consumer of wool products I would like to take this opportunity to urge you to use more Australian wool from mulesed sheep. Wool is one of the worlds most sustainable fibre products being produced naturally and with very few chemicals. Australian sheep that have been mulesed are free of the additional chemical contaminants that are required on sheep that have not been mulesed. Australian wool growers have been mulesing their sheep for many generations and mulesing is not cruel, in fact unmulesed sheep are much more likely to suffer inhumane welfare outcomes through the increased occurrence of savage and often fatal flystrike.
In addition a move to using unmulesed wool could result in an increase of carbon emissions annually of more than 50,000 kilograms from the Australian wool industry alone. The Australian wool industry currently sequesters around 64 million kilograms of carbon annually via wool production, and any action by retailers which forces wool growers out of the industry will mean a reduction in the amount of wool produced and a corresponding additional reduction in carbon sequestration, that will be a very bad outcome for consumers and for our planet.
The PETA campaign against the Australian wool industry is misguided and does not take into account the positive contribution that Australian wool makes to the environment and the comfort and welfare of millions of consumers in colder climates throughout the world. Phasing out mulesing by 2010 as called for by PETA would be bad decision for Australian Woolgrowers, a bad decision for Australian sheep, a bad decision for the environment and a bad decision for wool consumers throughout the world. I hope that you can see how important it is to support the use of wool from mulesed Australian sheep. I also hope that you will not support the misguided and untruthful PETA campaign. I will be interested in your response and will make purchasing decisions accordingly.
Thankyou for your time.
